The CD40105 has asynchronous inputs and outputs, and 3-state outputs. Input and output data can be shifted at different rates. In other words, you load in your data at one rate, and then as you require, you peel off your data at either the same rate or at a faster or slower rate. This is often referred to as an "elastic" register. You can easily expand them so that one 40105 dumps its output into the input of another 40105, other register or memory. And you can expand two CMOS 40105 registers to make an 8 bits x 16 words FIFO register, and four 40105 to make a 16 bits x 16 words FIFO register, etc.

Most circuit designers do not need a FIFO register (First-In, First-Out register) every day.
